I've recently purchased my own horse; my first horse. A beautiful Palomino Mountain Pleasure Horse. What a crazy/cool thing for me to do! Truthfully, it's probably a year too soon given my current abilities (novice rider) but Opportunity can knock at any time and although I may not be fully ready by some standards, not to take advantage of the economy, as well as help out a fellow horse owner to find a loving home for her horse and be able to keep her other horses by selling one seemed crazy. If I didn't do it, a year from now, I'm pretty confident I would be kicking myself over what could have been.
It must be breed because my experience with Sunny has been 100% different from my experience with Rally. Admittedly I'm also a little more confident now but I'm not nervous with Sunny at all (well ok, just a few beginner's nerves but I'm not afraid to go get him, be around him, take him out of his stall or the pasture etc). His temperament is fabulous and although he's only 6, you'd never know it. What a gentle, kind creature! His manners are impeccable too. His previous owner has owned him since he was 2 (and she purchased him from the breeder). Clearly she has taught him well. When I first started riding, I researched different breeds (thank you Barnes & Noble for not being mad that I parked myself on your floor in the Pet aisle for hours!) and came across the Mountain Pleasure Horse, the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse, and the Tennessee Walker. I felt then that of all the breeds in the books that I read, this was the one for me. I've continued to read/research since that time and it's kinda cool that my gut turned out to be right.
I'm so incredibly happy, dizzily so. I can hardly believe the words when I say "I own a horse". I'm looking forward to my first trail ride and am thrilled to have made a new friend in his previous owner. She is a fabulous lady!
